Working on my UFO Pile ...

I spent a few hours at MAQ's yesterday as was
able to finish my Navy and Lime Quilt!
Yippee!!

I also finished a SCQG charity quilt
it was a Cowboy/Rodeo Quilt
I meander stitched it up in a flash!
I LOVE this place!!

All I have to do is bind them and then...
Cross them off "My Quilting UFO" list!
Another YIPPEE!!

Yesterday I spent a few hours at MAQ's
to work on quilting another UFO!

This is my Blue and funky Green quilt
featuring my favorite ... Amy Butler fabric!

This is the design I'm quilting.

You think it would be easy tracing the dark lines with the red light!
But NO!
I seem to have the biggest issues with the rounded sections...
Boy do I need LOTs of practice!
A lot of my rounded centers are a bit pointy!
But I selected a nice turquoise blue thread that really
blends in so you can't actually see the quilting!!

I am so loving working on these UFOs,
with each one I'm completing I feel my sewing room
getting lighter and lighter!

I don't think I'll ever be UFO free, but just clearing out
these few have really helped me get over my stuck feeling!

Another top quilted!

About three years ago I had this Christmas quilt top basted!
I had grand ideas of designing a beautiful holly quilting motif
and quilting it all up on my Bernina 440.

Yeah .... so that never happened!

So off I went with my Christmas quilt
to my favorite longarm rental shop - Mad About Quilts.

I selected a holly and berry pantograph,
and a beautiful golden thread -
Mary Ann and Dora got my quilt all settled onto the machine

and in three hours the top was DONE!

This was the first time I've ever quilted on the longarm using
a pantograph - usually I just meander around!
And - OK.... the holly points are a bit rounded in places,
and my round berries look more oval - like the birds ate them!
But I am just so excited!
Another UFO almost done!
Just need to bind and label it!

UFO #1 ... the T-Shirt Quilt

This is my most important UFO .... my daughter's T-shirt quilt.

It's filled with t-shirts from all of her activities since she was old enough to
run, skate jump or swim (she never walked!at least I don't remember her walking -
I just remember chasing her all over the place!)

Each t-shirt was backed with woven interfacing and cut to size and surrounded
by fabrics that represent my daughter.
I've always called her my Athletic, Academic Band Geek -
just because she has always done so much and spread herself
out into so many areas and this quilt represents all of it!
It should be two quilts but she wanted it all in one so it's a two sided quilt ....
a no-no for t-shirt quilt - just too dang heavy ...
but she didn't care ....
so off to the longarmer's I went.

There is a fabulous place near me called M.A.Q. = Mad About Quilts
where you rent space on a longarm (after taking one of their lessons)
it's just the BEST!
You can learn the longarm skill (oh Have I got a lot to learn!)
and Mary Ann and Dora are right their to help you! I love it!

SO off I went last week to start quilting "THE" T-Shirt Quilt ....

I decided just to do a big meandering stitch -
no sense adding more weight onto this puppy!
And in Three HOURS I had it completely quilted!
Thank You Dora!!

I quilted in secret messages on some of the t-shirts
"Italy" on the t-shirt she purchased on her school trip to Italy her junior year
"Shark" on the Monetary Aquarium shirt
"Just have Fun" on one of her softball shirts
"Cookies" on the girl scout fabric
"Camping" on the camper fabric
You get the idea!

I even stitched in
"Athletics ... Academic.... Band Geek"
Oh I hope I spelt it correctly!
If not - oh well she knows I'm a terrible speller
and the longarm just doesn't have spell check -
I'm sure she'll understand!

In the bottom corner I stitched...
"Love Mum"

I've just finished putting the binding and now
I'm working on the quilt label.
Can't wait to show you that ...
it way way COOL!
But that's another post for another day!

Happy Quilting today ~J:)

Try out Longarm Quilting

I am now officially on vacation from my full time job - Yippee! I started my vacation with something for myself ... a class on longarm quilting! I always like to try new things and pick up new skills - and although I have done my own quilting on my Bernina - I have never used a long arm. They seem so intimidating!!

My class was at  Mad About Quilts and found it to be ... FABULOUS!

Mary Ann and Dora are excellent teachers - very patient, soft spoken and knowledgable.  For a very reasonable fee they provide a 45" x 45" sample to work on (2 pieces or muslin and batting), 3 zippers to attach to their machine, 4 white bobbins (which they will switch out for other colors if you need them too) and 2 needles! Everything to get you started on your own longarm adventure!

First they showed me how to pin the zippers onto the backing and then the top ... thank goodness the zippers have directions printed right on the zipper tape!! Then it was time to load the sample onto the machine. Yikes - not sure if I could do that again ... but they assured me that when I come back to work on my own project they are right there every step on the way - just in case I forget what to do!! That little piece of information set my mind at ease .... now it was time to have fun!!

I started out with free motion quilting ... first I had a mind blank .. . "Oh No what do I quilt??" SO I just started with meandering, loops and leaves .... I think the meandering is the easiest and I like my leaves!

Here you can see the zipper pinned onto the sample.
I did find the machine has a horizontal and vertical pull and you really need
to get used to the flow of the machine....
some of my rounded edges got a little squared look to them ...
I need practice, practice, practice.

The water look was fairly easy, you just have to keep track of where
your going to make sure you fill everything in ...
and then I went back to my comfort zone of meandering loops!

My attempt at flowers and flowers with flames ....
again not being used to the machine my edges squared up a bit....

OK I've decided to stick with the meandering loops and an occasional leaf and flower!

The it was onto trying the other side of the machine ... pantographs.
One would think that tracing the little red dot over the lines
would be a piece of cake .... you would be so wrong!!!

It was tougher than I thought it would be - definitely something that I would need to practice.
By practicing you train your muscle on the design.
Dora and Mary Ann gave me two great tips...
1) get a white board from the local office supply store and practice drawing different
designs over and over and over ... this will train your muscles and...
2) with out actually stitching on your fabric just trace the red dot over the pantograph lines
a few times - this will also train your muscles ...
I need that Muscle Memory ... I need lots of practice.

Mary Ann was so nice - so told me I did such a good job my first time out -  she's so sweet!
But somehow I think my flowers look more like those small dinosaurs
with the pointy spikes that run down their backs!!!

So that was my adventure into longarm quilting!
I highly recommend you try it and I HIGHLY recommend Mad About Quilts.
They offer a great beginner class and reasonable rental time on one of there machines,
and they are right there to help you every step of the way!
I've put a button on the side of this blog to direct you to their site.
Give them a try - give longarm quilting a try - I think you'll like it!

I already have two tops ready to take back and quilt ...
and I'm sure for my first few I'll stick you what's comfortable ...
meandering loops and leaves!!
